RECLAMATION SUCCESS

 Coal Run Coal Company

100-year-old brick home on reclaimed land.
The Coal Run Coal Co., received the 2001 Kentucky Commissioner's Award from the Department for Surface Mining Reclamation & Enforcement for the outstanding reclamation work performed on their 3.7-acre coal preparation, storage and load-out facility located just north of Pikeville, Kentucky. The area was first used as a coal load-out operation in 1979, but it wasn't until 1987 that these areas were required to obtain a permit. The company successfully reclaimed the site to a "commercial/industrial" post mining land use. The 3.7-acre permit area is a small portion of what was originally a 200-acre tract known as the Hayfield Home Place. There is a 100-year-old four room brick home on this site that is recognized as the second brick structure to be built in Pike County. The company used this building as their business office while in operation.
