How Do You Get The Invitation To Talk With A Class?

As a last resort, you can make a cold call to the school. But try a few other methods first.

  • If you have children or grandchildren, use their teachers and former teachers as a beginning contact.

  • If you are not married to a teacher, you probably have a neighbor or friend who is a teacher. Or maybe one of your employees is.

  • Check out your civic, social, and recreational partners. School districts are often one of the largest employers in a community, so teachers should be all around you.

  • If you are lucky enough to have a company public relations or community relations department, call them for help.

  • Contact your industry’s trade association. It’s their job to make you look good.

The new nationwide curriculum standards emphasize careers. Your operation involves a number of different jobs and skills, so your company should be a natural source for qualified speakers. Do some research, find other employees who want to help the schools, and offer a group of willing speakers to your local school. Then call the school principal— their job is to use the resources from the community.

If you are working with a larger company, spend the money and offer an Open House, followed by a nice dinner for the new teachers and administrators. Turnover in school districts can go above 14% every year. And it’s a great method to make people unfamiliar with “miners” aware of you and your industry.

Don’t expect to make an offer this week and be in the classroom next week. Teachers have far tighter schedules, with less flexibility, than most people think.
