MII's Mission

The Mineral Information Institute (MII) is a national 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating youth about the science of minerals and other natural resources, and about their importance in our every day lives.

Each year MII works with interested professional and scientific associations, and various government and education agencies, to help classroom teachers develop materials that are directly usable by teachers in a variety of subjects and a multitude of grade levels. All programs require updating and maintenance to ensure their continuing value and use in the classroom. MII will provide that and will distribute those programs that merit continued use.

Supported by corporations, foundations, scientific associations, and individuals from across the nation, MII distributes these materials free to classroom teachers to supplement existing curricula. More than 110,000 K-12 classroom teachers receive teaching materials from MII each year.

MII is supported solely by donations. If we have helped you or you believe in what we do, please send a donation

Objectives

  • Introduce people to the social and economic benefits of minerals and other natural resources, and how they can be used in an environmentally responsible manner;
  • Present accurate and balanced information about the science of minerals and other natural resources, their geological occurrence, how they are used in products we use every day, and other fact-based information;
  • Work in cooperation with other organizations and individuals to ensure that relevant and factual educational materials are readily available to teachers to improve the awareness and understanding for the wise development and use of our natural resources;
  • Support teachers by surveying and evaluating the effectiveness of classroom materials and improving them as necessary.

MII's On-Going Core Programs

1) National Education Project
Through the National Education Project (NEP), MII develops and distributes a series of Teacher Helper packets to supplement existing science and science-related classroom curricula. Each packet contains color posters, lesson plans, information, and student activity pages.

NEP materials also are used as a resource in teacher education programs at some of the 400 colleges and universities who have requested MII materials.

Teachers Use MII In All Grades

2) Global Science: Energy, Resources, Environment
The Global Science: Energy, Resources, Environment textbook is a high school environmental curriculum that is ahead of its time, providing truly integrated science studies in a single text. MII is involved with the Global Science curriculum because it is an honest attempt to present material to high school students in an accurate and balanced manner. Global Science combines the intelligent use of technology and the knowledge of natural and economic forces that allow us to be productive and still protect our environment.

As a secondary level laboratory curriculum, Global Science meets more of the National Science Standards because as an integrated science program it draws from traditional biology, chemistry, physics and earth science disciplines. The strong integration of math enables teachers to provide meaningful hands-on projects and the means to process that data.

The role of MII is to supplement the resources of the publisher and author so that the content of the text can be more thoroughly researched, accurate and balanced. Now moving into the 5th Edition, Global Science is one of the largest-selling integrated environmental science high school textbooks in the nation.

The George C. Marshall Institute in Washington, DC recently sponsored a national study conducted by the Independent Commission on Environmental Education to evaluate 71 different environmental science textbooks and programs. Project director Kathleen deBettencourt said:

"One of the most troubling aspects of this study is the discovery of how superficial the science is in high school environmental science textbooks. These texts are often little more than catalogs of environmental facts and issues. They simply do not teach environmental science ... Global Science is an exception; it pays reasonable attention to the actual science in environmental science."

Funding/Support

MII is supported solely by donations. Nearly half of the Institute's funding is provided by individuals (including more than 4,200 teachers), by professional engineering, scientific societies and organizations, and by private foundations. Due to MII's network of contributing volunteers from academia, industry, professional societies, and individual scientists, as well as the volume of teachers MII now serves, MII is able to create, print, and mail five different Teacher Helper packets. While these educational materials are provided at no cost to teachers, someone has to pay the cost. And those someones are the individuals and organizations who donate to MII. ---  Please consider donating.

With word of mouth and repeat requests from teachers, MII currently is serving teachers at its financial capacity. More than 35,000 K-12 teachers receive MII's new program of materials for science and related classroom instruction.

MII believes many types of industry must work together to assure our youth understand the science of minerals and natural resources in order to find and use them wisely in the future. Broad corporate representation is critical to our efforts to demonstrate to teachers and students that understanding our natural resources -- based on balanced, fact-based information -- is not an issue espoused by one type of industry, one political faction, or select advocate communities. It is for all of us. We all use minerals; we all depend on them for food, clean water, health, safety, transportation, communication, recreation, cultural expression, and many other things.

Teacher's Comments

At MII, teachers are our customers
Here is what our customers say about MII.

MORE TEACHER COMMENTS

"I used the packet you sent last year and plan to utilize your new packet just as much."
Megan Pierfy - Trenton, New Jersey - Science, English, Reading - 6th, 7th & 8th grades

"Yes, I will really use MII materials. Our science curriculum is weak. We need to educate our children in science."
Sherry Roepke - Tullahoma, Tennessee - All subjects - Kindergarten

"This is the best 'package' I have received in years. Most of the activities and information at the elementary level is mostly old-had stuff. Your materials are fresh, easy-to-use and chock full of info and ideas. You are really on the 'cutting edge' of providing new and nifty rock and mineral activities"
J.M. Erdman - Wisconsin

"The list of how I use your material goes on and on. The iron in the cereal experiment will be used during our electricity/magnetism unit. We just finished astronomy. The information about the gold plated Hubble telescope was shared. The article on mirrors and reflection fits into our current unit on light. The material on money fits our third and fourth grade economic unit. The pencil article fits our simple machines and invention unit. Geology is coming up soon and information and posters will be used creatively. Third grade just finished a dental health unit and made toothpaste. I'll share the tooth page with them!!"
Jan Taylor - Ohio
