The Bourg Strip Mine in Jackson County, Colorado, has
an excellent environmental compliance record. The mine was awarded the
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology 1999 Reclamation Award for a
Fully Reclaimed Mine. The company has developed highly effective,
innovative alternative methods of sediment control, through the
construction of terrace benches to control erosion prior to
revegetation. Since mining was completed in 1987, the Flatiron
Companies, operators of the mine, have created an area well suited to
wildlife habitat. Antelope, deer and elk are seen grazing on the site,
and sage grouse reside in the reclaimed community. Final vegetation
surveys conducted in the summer of 1998 demonstrated the establishment
of a predominantly native sage shrubland that exceeds the standard of
2,000 stems per acre, averaging 13,785 stems.
