Global Science
Energy, Resources, Environment
6th Edition ©2006
"We need to teach our students that the source of
the fact is as important as the fact itself." - John Christensen, author
Global Science is an integrated science program designed by high
school science teachers for high school students.
Students will be confronted with many scientific and social challenges in the
twenty-first century. Among them will be to extract and use our resources in
environmentally responsible ways. Help them learn to make wise decisions.
Global Science encourages students to ask hard-hitting questions and
discuss alternative solutions to resource problems. Global Science is a
truly integrated text, combining life, earth, and physical science with
chemistry and physics to provide students with a complete view of their world.
Objectives of Global Science:
-
Develop an awareness of the interrelatedness of resources,
economics, environment, food, production, and population
-
Understand concepts and laws that govern our use of
resources
-
Examine our present energy sources and consumption patterns,
and use this information as a component for future planning
-
Apply the fundamentals of exponential growth to population
and resources situations at national and global levels
-
Model the depletion of a nonrenewable resource and use the
model to understand historical resource depletion data
-
Grasp the complexity of developing useful resources by
examining their widespread use
-
Master the basic principles of economics and how these
principles relate to resource/environmental problems
-
Acquire basic scientific skills and attitudes needed for
problem solving
-
Observe, analyze, and draw conclusions from situations
related to resources and the environment as preparations for becoming
responsible citizens
-
Become acquainted with careers and challenges in resource
industries that depend on vital resource decisions
IT CAN BE USED FOR:
-
9th grade core science courses
-
a second- or third-year lab science with a focus on issues
in science
-
science-technology-society courses
-
integrated science courses
-
environmental science courses
"Global Science motivates students because its
hands-on approach gets students
involved in the energy conservation dilemma."
- Tracey Ackerman, Mother of Mercy High School, Cincinnati, Ohio
