Beginning with one super continent, Pangaea, 180 million years ago, one sees that by 120 million years ago, most of the continents have separated, while the Antarctic, Australia and the Indian Subcontinent remain as one landmass. By 60 million years ago, North and South America have rejoined, while the Indian Subcontinent has broken loose from the Antarctic and started its rapid movement toward Asia. During this period Italy had separated from Africa and was moving toward Europe. Note Africa’s movement relative to the Equator, and that Asia Minor is a part of the African Plate. Today, the plates continue to move as new sea floor is produced along the mid-ocean rift system. The Tectonocycle uses a geometric form called a Hexaflexagon. |

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Manipulate the Tectonocycle by pushing its bottom points up through the center. As each set of surfaces come into alignment, you will see that the sea floor has spread, causing the continents to move. |
